Écluse 18 Méditerranée - (2.60m)

Locks 12 - 18 inclusive are in a chain.  Once a boat enters a chain it has to complete the entire chain.  Mooring in the pounds is not allowed as the locks are all automatic.

When the locks were extended to the Freycinet standard in the 1870s, seven of the first 20 locks Méditerranée side of the summit were removed and several of the remaining locks were deepened.  The locks were then renumbered and this lock shows the evidence that it used to be lock number 25.

Écluses 28/29 Méditerranée (remnants)

When the locks were extended to the Freycinet standard in the 1870s, seven of the first 20 locks Méditerranée side of the summit were removed and several of the remaining locks were deepened. A similar exercise was carried out on the same side but towards the end of the bottom end of canal.  These are the remnants of one of those removed locks at the bottom end.

The remains of the original lock cottage can also be seen.

Écluse 34bis Méditerranée - (10.76m)

This lock is situated in the town of Chalon-sur-Saône and is the final lock on the canal before it meets the River Saône. It is the deepest canal lock in France at 11 metres which is nearly twice as deep as the deepest lock in the UK.

The lock has floating bollards as with all locks on this canal that are around 5 metres or more deep.

The bis suffix is similar to the UK, -a, -b etc.
