The canal and lock are built to Freycinet standard and hence can accommodate 38 metre péniches. This short canal was opened in 1980 and links the Rhine at Vogelsheim to the canal du Rhône au Rhin (branche nord) at Kunheim.
Much of the canal du Rhône au Rhin (branche nord) from Mulhouse to Strasbourg was abandoned once the river Rhine was canalised from Basel to Mulhouse. This meant that there was a danger that traffic could not reach Colmar so the canal de Neuf-Brisach was built in order to maintain a link between Colmar and the river Rhine.

Écluse du Rhin à Vogelsheim
This lock is known as and sits at the junction of the river Rhine and the canal de Neuf-Brisach. It is the only lock on the 6.5 km long canal.
As the lock takes boats on or off the Rhine it is operated by lock keepers during opening hours. It is generally about one metre deep but the level varies depending upon the level of the river. It has sliding doors so that it can be operated whether the river is higher or lower than the canal itself.
