Locks: Chichester Canal

The 12 mile Chichester canal was designed by the well known canal engineer, John Rennie, who died in 1822, the year the canal opened.

It was designed as part of the inland link between London and Chichester/Portsmouth.  The Chichester Canal linked Ford on the River Arun to Salterns in Chichester harbour. The River Arun led to the Wey & Arun Canal and then the River Wey and then the River Thames forming "London's Lost Route To The Sea" - an absolutely fascinating if you can find a copy.  Sadly the route was never really profitable as the sea route became the cheaper alternative.
