Locks: de Rigole de Torcy

This 4.7km canal linked the Le Creusot iron foundries at Torcy to the Canal du Centre at Montchanin.

The Rigole de Torcy was opened in 1829 for two reasons:

1. To provide a feed to the summit of the Canal du Centre at Montchanin from the lake at Torcy

2. To provide a narrow navigable canal to allow cast canon to be transported from the le Creusot foundries down to the Canal du Centre and then south down to Marseilles naval boatyards. Also west to the naval dockyards at Nantes on the Atlantic ocean.

The canal is now disused and filled in in many places.  I cannot ascertain how many locks were on the canal but we found one.  There is also a 1.3km long tunnel.

Écluse 1 - Montchanin (abandoned)

The lock cottage is still inhabited.
