Locks: River Rhine

The river Rhine enters France from Switzerland downstream of Basle and enters Germany north of Strasbourg. There are links with the canal du Rhône au Rhin at Niffer at the upstream end. There is a link with the canal de Colmar half way down to Strasbourg. About one km downstream of the lock at Rhinau there is a link with the canal du Rhône au Rhin (nord). At Strasbourg there are links at both ends of the city to the canal de la Marne au Rhin (est) and the Strasbourg ports.

All the locks on the 184 km French portion of the river Rhine are actually a pair of locks. The largest of the pair at Rhinau is 185 x 23 metres and the other is 185 x 13 metres. This is the size of the majority of the other pairs. Those downstream of Strasbourg are 270 metres in length but the same widths.

The centre of the river marks the border between France and Germany along the full length of the French portion of the river.
Each of the French locks also has hydroelectric power generation, consequently water levels can fluctuate greatly depending upon the demand for power.
